Choosing Tree-Friendly Straps (and Why Rope Is a Bad Idea)
It's tempting to treat suspension as an afterthought — any rope or cord that holds should do the job. But what holds your hammock up is also what's pressed against a living tree for hours at a time, and the difference between a wide strap and a thin cord is the difference between a harmless overnight hang and a scar that stays on the trunk for years.
How narrow cordage damages a tree
A tree moves nutrients and water through a thin layer just beneath the bark called the cambium. Wrap a narrow rope or cord around the trunk and load it with a hundred-plus pounds, and that force concentrates into a very small contact area — enough, over a night or a season of repeated hangs, to compress or cut into that layer. In the worst cases, this girdles the tree: cutting off its nutrient flow all the way around the circumference, which can kill it even though the bark on the outside might look intact.
This isn't a hypothetical concern. It's specifically why campsite and park guidance increasingly either bans rope-based hammock suspension outright or requires wide tree-friendly straps as a condition of hanging at all.
Why width is the fix
The physics is simple: pressure is force divided by contact area. A wide, flat webbing strap spreads the same suspended weight over many times the surface area of a rope, which correspondingly lowers the pressure on any given patch of bark. As a rough guideline, straps of 1.5 inches or wider are the commonly cited threshold for genuinely tree-friendly hanging; some manufacturers go wider still for extra margin.
Width also happens to solve two other problems at once: a wide strap grips the bark better without needing to bite in, and it distributes the load evenly enough that you rarely need to worry about it slipping the way a narrow cord sometimes does under an uneven load.
What to look for when buying straps
- Width: 1.5 inches or wider, no-stretch webbing (not stretchy bungee-style material, which can slowly let the hang sag lower over the night).
- Multiple attachment loops: A strap with a series of sewn loops along its length lets you choose the working height without needing to tie or untie anything, which matters when you're trying to dial in a specific hang angle.
- Rated capacity: Reputable straps print a rated capacity in pounds or kilonewtons. Compare that number against your actual suspended weight — a strap load calculator will convert your weight and hang angle into the real tension each strap has to hold, which is usually higher than people assume.
- Stitching quality: Bar-tacked or box-stitched attachment points hold up far better under repeated loading than a few straight lines of stitching.
Not every tree is equally forgiving
Bark thickness and hardness vary a lot between species, and that changes how much margin for error you actually have. Thick-barked hardwoods tend to tolerate a wide strap reasonably well, while thin-barked or young trees can bruise or split under the same load that a mature hardwood wouldn't even notice. When you have a choice of trees at a site, favor larger, mature, thick-barked trunks over young or thin-barked ones, even if the young tree happens to be more conveniently spaced.
Bark condition matters too: a tree that's already stressed, recently damaged, or showing signs of disease is a poor anchor twice over — both because it may be structurally weaker, and because it has less capacity to recover from the added pressure of a strap.
Setting up without harming the tree
Beyond choosing the right strap, a few habits round out a genuinely low-impact hang: wrap the strap once around the trunk rather than looping it multiple times (which concentrates load into fewer contact bands), avoid hanging from the same two trees night after night if you're camping in one spot for a while, and check your straps for slipping or digging in once you're loaded — a strap that's shifted to a narrower point on the bark has lost some of the width advantage you paid for.
None of this is complicated, and it costs nothing beyond buying the right gear the first time. Once you've made the switch to wide straps, tree-friendly hanging stops being an extra chore and just becomes how you hang.
