Scouting before you set up

Most hang-angle guidance assumes you already have two trees picked out. This calculator runs the same geometry in reverse: starting from your ridgeline length and the strap height you can realistically reach, it works out the tree spacing that would give you a comfortable hang, plus a range around it so real, imperfect tree placement still has room to work.

Walking a site with this range in mind — rather than picking the first two trees that look roughly hammock-sized apart — is the easiest way to avoid arriving at your spot for the night only to discover your ridgeline is stretched drum-tight or your straps barely reach.

Why does tree spacing matter so much?

Trees closer together than your setup wants force a flat, low hang with your ridgeline nearly stretched taut; trees farther apart force straps so high you can barely reach them, or a hang so steep the tension multiplies. Knowing the workable range before you unpack saves you from setting up twice.

What if I can only find trees outside the recommended range?

A little outside the range is rarely a dealbreaker — walk the site for another pair first, then adjust: for trees closer together, use a shorter ridgeline setting or accept a flatter hang; for trees farther apart, you'll need higher strap points or a longer ridgeline than this calculator assumed. If neither trade-off works, a freestanding hammock stand removes the tree-spacing problem entirely.

Does wide webbing actually protect the tree?

Yes. Wide, flat tree straps (roughly 1.5 inches or more) spread the load over more bark surface than narrow rope or cord, which concentrates force into a thin line and can cut into or kill the cambium layer under the bark, especially on soft-barked species. Wide straps plus choosing healthy, adequately thick trees are the two biggest factors in hanging without harming what you're tied to.
