Setting Up Your First Hammock Camp: A Step-by-Step Guide
The first time you hang a camping hammock, it can feel like there are a dozen small decisions to get right before you can actually lie down. In practice it comes down to a short, repeatable sequence: pick the trees, hang the straps, set the angle, and add your weather layers. Do those four things in order and the rest falls into place.
Step 1: Pick two healthy, well-spaced trees
Look for two live, standing trees with a trunk thick enough that it won't flex noticeably under your weight — as a rough guide, anything you can't easily push over by hand is a reasonable candidate. Avoid dead trees, obviously leaning trees, and anything with visible rot or a shallow root system pulling out of the soil.
Spacing matters more than people expect. Step 2: Hang wide, tree-friendly straps
Skip rope or thin cord against the bark — it concentrates your weight into a narrow line and can cut into the cambium layer just under the bark, which is how a tree gets girdled and killed over a season of careless hangs. Wide webbing straps, generally 1.5 inches or more, spread that same load over far more surface area and are the standard low-impact choice.
Wrap the strap around the trunk once, thread it back through itself, and pull snug. Most straps have a series of loop points along their length so you can choose roughly where the working height ends up before you ever clip in the hammock.
Step 3: Get your hang angle close to 30 degrees
This is the step that separates a comfortable night from a folded-taco night. Step 4: Add your weather and comfort layers
A bare hammock body is only the start of a camping system. Three additions cover most conditions:
- A rain tarp, pitched above the hammock with enough overhang to keep wind-blown rain off the ends.

Choosing trees: what "sturdy enough" actually looks like
"Anything you can't easily push over by hand" is a good rough filter, but it's worth knowing the specific things to look for once you're standing in front of a candidate tree, because tree selection is a genuine safety and stewardship question, not a formality. Look for a trunk with intact, unbroken bark rather than large patches missing or peeling away; a visible root flare at the base rather than roots that look undermined, exposed, or pulling loose from the soil; no large fungal shelf growth (a hard, shelf-like fungus on the trunk, often a sign of internal rot); and a canopy that's reasonably full rather than mostly bare or dropping dead branches. Any one of these on its own isn't necessarily disqualifying, but a tree showing several of them at once is a tree to walk past in favor of a healthier one nearby.
Also look up, not just at eye level. A dead or broken branch hung up in the canopy above your hang spot — sometimes called a "widowmaker" — has nothing to do with your suspension setup and everything to do with where you chose to sleep. Mistakes that ruin an otherwise good first night
A few specific, avoidable mistakes account for most bad first nights, beyond the basic setup steps already covered:
- Pitching the tarp too low or too tight, which cuts off airflow and makes condensation on the inside of the tarp far worse on cool, humid nights. Leave real clearance between the tarp and the hammock body.
