Sleeping Flat on the Diagonal: The Real Hammock Comfort Trick
If there's one piece of hammock technique that matters more than any single piece of gear, it's this: lie diagonally across the fabric, not straight down the centerline. It sounds like a minor styling choice, but it's the difference between the folded, knees-up "banana" position that makes people swear off hammocks after one bad night, and the genuinely flat, comfortable lay that makes hammock camping worth doing at all. The diagonal lay isn't a trick you need special gear for — it's a direct consequence of the same geometry that governs hang angle and ridgeline length, and understanding why it works makes it much easier to actually find in the dark at a real campsite.
Why a hammock curves, and why straight-down-center feels bad
A hammock's fabric, hung between two points, sags into a curve — not flat, not a sharp V, but a shallow arc, wider at the middle than the geometry of a straight line would suggest. Lie straight down the centerline of that arc and your body is forced to follow the curve itself: shoulders and feet pulled up and in toward the center by the fabric's natural shape, hips pushed slightly down into the deepest part of the sag. That's the classic hammock "banana" or "taco" — folded, knees bent, arms pinned — and it's not a defect in any particular hammock. It's what any single-layer fabric sags into between two fixed points, regardless of brand or price.
Move off the centerline at an angle, and the geometry changes in your favor. Lying diagonally — head toward one corner, feet toward the opposite corner — lets your body's actual straight-line length lie across a much flatter section of that same curved fabric, because the diagonal path between two opposite corners of a rectangle is longer and straighter relative to the curve than the direct line down the middle. You're not fighting the sag anymore; you're using the one direction across the fabric where the sag barely shows up at all.
The ridgeline sets how consistently you can find it
This is where a fixed ridgeline earns its keep beyond just locking in your angle. Because a structural ridgeline caps the fabric's spread to an exact, repeatable length, the same diagonal lay is available in the same place every time you hang — you're not re-discovering the flat spot from scratch on a fabric that sagged differently than it did last night. - Deep ridgeline (8.8ft): 29.1°, ideal
- Standard ridgeline (9.13ft): 30.2°, ideal

All three land comfortably in the ideal band for the same strap height, which is the point: once a ridgeline is fixed at a sensible ratio, small style differences don't cost you the flat diagonal lay — they just shift how much fabric wraps around you while you're in it. The deep ridgeline gives more wrap and warmth at a slightly flatter angle; the flat ridgeline gives a tauter, more open lay at a slightly steeper one. Either way, the diagonal is still there to find, in roughly the same place, night after night.
How hang angle changes how much diagonal you get
Hang angle and ridgeline length both affect the fabric's overall shape, which in turn affects how pronounced the diagonal effect is. Hang too flat — well below the 25–35° comfort band covered in the 30-degree rule — and the sides of the fabric rise up around you regardless of the angle you lie at, because there's simply too much loose fabric relative to the span. The diagonal lay softens that problem but can't fully solve it if the base angle is badly off. Hang within the recommended band, and the fabric has just enough tension for the diagonal to open up into a genuinely flat lay rather than a slightly-less-folded one. Finding your diagonal at the campsite
The technique itself takes a few tries the first time and becomes automatic after that:
- Get in and lie roughly down the centerline first, just to confirm the basic hang feels reasonable (not obviously too flat or too tight).
- Slide your feet toward one lower corner of the fabric and your head toward the opposite upper corner, rather than staying centered.
- Keep adjusting the angle of your body relative to the hammock's long axis until your shoulders and hips stop feeling squeezed inward — you'll feel the fabric go from wrapping you to genuinely supporting you flat, usually fairly suddenly rather than gradually.
- Let your feet settle slightly off to the side rather than pointed straight down the hammock's length; a small amount of foot rotation is normal and comfortable in a good diagonal lay.
Most people land somewhere between a 15 and 30-degree body angle relative to the hammock's centerline, though the exact number varies by hammock width, body size, and personal preference — there's no single correct diagonal angle the way there's a recommended hang angle, because you're optimizing for how it feels rather than for a load calculation.
This is a gathered-end technique, not a universal one
It's worth being specific about which style of hammock this applies to. The diagonal lay is the standard comfort technique for a gathered-end hammock — the common single-fabric style where each end draws together into a suspension point, which is what every calculator on this site models. Bridge-style hammocks, which use spreader bars at each end to hold the fabric open flat, solve the same "avoid the banana curve" problem with a completely different mechanism — the bars do the flattening, so lying straight down the centerline is normal and expected on that style, not a mistake. Insulation has to follow you off-center
Once you're lying diagonally, your body's actual footprint on the fabric shifts too, and your insulation needs to cover it there, not just down the centerline where it might have been positioned when you packed it. A sleeping pad is the one that needs more attention: a pad sized and centered for a straight-down lay can leave your shoulders or hips hanging half off the edge once you rotate into a diagonal position, recreating exactly the cold-gap problem a pad is already somewhat prone to. If you're using a pad and sleeping diagonally, check that it's wide enough, or positioned generously enough, to still be under you at the angle you actually sleep at.
Wider fabric changes the diagonal, it doesn't remove it
Double-width or two-person hammocks, even when used solo, are often recommended specifically because the extra fabric width makes the diagonal lay easier to find and flatter once you're in it — more width means more room to rotate before you run out of fabric to lie across. That's a real advantage, but it doesn't eliminate the need for the technique; a double hammock hung and lain in straight down the centerline still curves the same way a single one does, just with a bit more forgiving margin at the edges. Extra width makes the diagonal lay more comfortable and more forgiving to find, not unnecessary.
Common ways people miss it on the first try
- Not rotating far enough. A shallow, barely-off-center angle keeps most of the banana curve intact. The flat spot is usually further off-axis than it feels like it should be the first time you try it.
- Keeping feet pointed straight down the hammock's length. Letting your feet rotate slightly to match your body's diagonal angle, rather than staying square to the long axis, is part of what makes the position work.
- Fighting a bad base hang instead of fixing it. If the fabric is genuinely too flat or too steep to begin with, no amount of diagonal repositioning fully compensates — fix the angle first, then find the diagonal within it.
- Forgetting the bug net and tarp were pitched for a centered lay. A tight bug net or a narrow tarp can bump against your shoulders or feet once you've rotated diagonally; give yourself a little extra clearance when you pitch them if you know you sleep diagonally.
Combining all three pieces
None of hang angle, ridgeline length, or diagonal positioning fully solves hammock comfort on its own — they work together. A hang angle inside the 25–35° band gives that fabric the right amount of tension to lie flat rather than sag into a deep U. And lying diagonally across that properly-tensioned fabric is what actually turns "technically hung correctly" into "genuinely comfortable to sleep in." Skip any one of the three and the other two only get you partway there — which is usually the real explanation behind "I did everything right and it's still not comfortable" complaints, since the missing piece is almost always the diagonal, the one step that has nothing to do with any calculator and everything to do with how you actually lie down once you're in.
