Packed weight matters differently depending on how you're getting to your campsite. Drive up, unload the trunk, and carry everything fifty feet, and an extra pound is nothing. Carry that same gear fifteen miles a day for four days, and every ounce gets felt, repeatedly, in a way that's easy to underestimate until you're the one carrying it. Weighing your own gear accurately
A kitchen scale that reads in ounces or grams is accurate enough for this exercise and far more useful than trusting a manufacturer's listed spec, which can be measured differently (with or without stuff sacks, guy lines, or included stakes) than however you actually pack the item. Weigh each piece the way you'd actually carry it — hammock with its stuff sack, tarp with its guy lines already attached if that's how you pack it — and you'll get a total that matches what's actually going in your pack rather than an optimistic sum of individually-idealized component weights. Diminishing returns, and when they stop being worth it
The categories that dropped the most weight in the worked example above — tarp, suspension, quilts — are usually also the ones where lighter options cost meaningfully more money and sometimes trade away some durability or weather margin. Shaving the first few ounces off a heavy, dated gear list is almost always worth it; shaving the last few ounces off a system that's already reasonably light usually means spending disproportionately more for a smaller and smaller further reduction. Whether that last bit is worth chasing depends entirely on your trip: a five-night thru-hike where you feel every ounce on your back for hours a day justifies more investment than a one-night trip where the gear rides in a trunk for all but the last quarter mile.
A simple rule based on trip length
